President John Mahama has firmly rejected speculation that he plans to amend Ghana’s Constitution to secure a third presidential term.

Addressing journalists during the Presidential Media Encounter at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, Mr Mahama laughed off the rumors, saying: “Look in my face, do I look like a supreme leader?”

The question came after suggestions that his current “legacy term” might encourage him to push for an extension of the two-term limit. Responding, Mahama emphasized his democratic values: “That is, to paraphrase Prof Atta Mills, do I look like a cat hunter? Do I look like a supreme leader? I’m a Democrat, through and through. And even when we attained two-thirds of Parliament, I said that we are not going to use it to ride roughshod over the minority, but rather to give opportunity for democracy to flourish.”

Ghana’s 1992 Constitution restricts presidents to a maximum of two four-year terms, a provision Mahama says he fully respects. He stressed that any attempt to weaken democratic institutions for political gain would only set back the country’s democratic progress.

By dismissing the speculation, Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to constitutional democracy, insisting that his administration would protect the integrity of Ghana’s democratic order.
