FrimpongAccra’s perennial flooding situation is expected to be a thing of the past following the approval of a €90 million loan agreement to finance the design and construction of drainage and ancillary sewage system.
The drain project will see the rehabilitation of the Nima drain from Kaokudi to the Odaw River Basin.
The capital city has for many years been experiencing floods resulting in the loss of lives, livelihoods and properties.
In a bid to permanently address this annual ritual, the government has secured the facility to improve the operation and maintenance of drainage infrastructure in the Nima Drain and its adverse impact on the flow into the Odaw drain.
The project is estimated to be executed and completed within twenty-four (24) months from the day of commencement.
According to a report from Parliament’s Works and Housing Committee, “the project would commence upon the fulfilment of conditions precedent set out for the commencement of works and receipt of the Engineer’s notice to commencement by the contractor.”
The committee also noted that the Nima drain project is in line with government’s vision of improving flood risk and solid waste management in the Greater Accra region and expected to enhance economic and social activities in the project area in particular.
