AdubianewsMinority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has publicly apologised to Deputy Minister-Designate for Health, Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, following controversial comments he made regarding her nomination. The apology came during her vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee.
The remarks in question were made during a recent debate in Parliament, where Afenyo-Markin questioned the rationale behind her nomination. His comments were widely interpreted as implying that her appointment was influenced by “strange reasons,” suggesting a possible case of favouritism over other qualified female MPs, particularly Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings.
These remarks drew significant backlash from fellow legislators and the public, with many criticising them as dismissive of women’s competence in politics. The criticism also highlighted broader concerns about gender representation and meritocracy in Ghana’s governance.
Seizing the moment during the vetting session, Afenyo-Markin addressed Dr. Ayensu-Danquah directly, stating:
“I want to say to you that to the extent that, as a colleague, we play, we relate very formally, in formal, and at that moment unbeknownst to me, you felt I had crossed the red line, I say to you I’m sorry. Is that fair?”
Dr. Ayensu-Danquah accepted the apology, responding: “That is fair, and I’m very appreciative that you have taken this opportunity to apologise. And I hope that moving forward, we will have a better relationship. And I’m very grateful and humbled. Thank you.”
Her calm and gracious response helped defuse what could have become a prolonged controversy during the vetting process. Afenyo-Markin’s quick move to apologise suggested an awareness of the mounting criticism and the need to repair political and public goodwill.
The incident has reignited conversations about the role and recognition of women in Ghanaian politics. Though progress has been made, women currently make up approximately 14.5% of Parliament—a number that still falls short of the 30% target often promoted by gender advocacy groups.
This episode serves as a reminder of the importance of respectful discourse, especially when navigating sensitive issues such as gender, leadership, and fair representation.
