Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin addressing supporters after dismissing alleged threats from NDC’s Chief Sofo Azorka

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has dismissed threats allegedly made against him by the National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Sofo Azorka, insisting that he will not be intimidated.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, after Afenyo-Markin paid an unannounced visit to the NDC’s party office in Akwatia. The move sparked a heated confrontation with party executives, who accused him of attempting to provoke supporters ahead of the crucial by-election.

A visibly angered Chief Azorka reportedly described the Minority Leader’s visit as “highly disrespectful” and “provocative,” further accusing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of employing intimidation tactics. In response, Afenyo-Markin alleged that Azorka had gone as far as threatening to kill him.

“I have heard that the NDC’s Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, said that he wants to ‘kill’ me. We know them—the infamous Azorka Boys; all they know is beating people up and killing others. So, this is not his first time threatening people. But I am not a coward,” he stated.

Calling on NPP supporters to stand firm, Afenyo-Markin urged them not to allow fear to influence their political choices. “There are foot soldiers on the ground. So, nobody should let the words of Azorka put fear into anybody. We do not do politics with fear; it’s all about courage. Our forebearers spent time in jail all for the sake of politics, so don’t let anybody put fear into you,” he added.

The confrontation has heightened political tensions in Akwatia, where both the NPP and NDC are intensifying their campaigns ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested by-election.
