Alan Kyeremateng in trouble: He may never be NPP’s flagbearer. 46

Hon. Alan Kwadwo Kyeremateng is the current Minister of Trade and Industry in the Akufo-Addo led NPP government. He is also a three time contender of the party’s flagbearership position. He contested for the post in 2008, 2012, and 2016 with Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo who is currently the president of Ghana.

Being an active politician, the Trade and Industry minister is still likely to contest for the position of flagbearer again to lead the party into the 2024 general elections. This time, his major contender is likely to be the current vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

We have decided to find out what is likely to stand in the way of Hon. Alan Kyeremateng in his efforts to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December 2024 general elections.

1. Alan Kyeremateng’s declining popularity: over the years, it seems the popularity of Hon. Kyeremateng has been dwindling. Considering the percentage votes the Minister pulled in the party’s presidential primaries in 2008, 2012, and 2016, it can be seen that his popularity keeps declining. In the last primaries in 2016, Alan Kyeremateng had a little over 5% of total valid votes. This implies that several of his followers have left.

2. The Bawumia Factor: one thing that cannot be overlooked is that the vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has won the hearts of several Ghanaians and NPP followers so much. Especially after the 2013 election petition at the supreme court, Dr. Bawumia’s popularity grew so astronomically that he is now a force to reckon with, politically.

The above are the major reasons, among others, why we believe Hon. Alan Kyeremateng’s bid to become the NPP’s flagbearer can only be a mirage. What do you think about this? Share your thoughts by commenting below, thank you.
