Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II addressing political leaders on aviation safety

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has advised political leaders to desist from turning the procurement of presidential planes and helicopters into partisan debates, stressing that such decisions are crucial to Ghana’s national security.

He gave this caution when Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, paid a courtesy call on him at the Manhyia Palace after last week’s helicopter crash in Obuasi that claimed eight lives.

The Asantehene described the tragic event as a “national concern” and conveyed his sympathy to President John Mahama and the families of the victims. He emphasised that aviation safety and security should be treated with the utmost seriousness.

“Enough of the politicising of the purchase of presidential planes and helicopters. Human lives are at stake here. We must invest to safeguard their safety and efficiency,” Otumfuo said, pointing out that most of the military aircraft in use are outdated and in poor condition.

He called on both sides of the political divide to prioritise the nation’s security by investing in modern aircraft and working together to prevent future tragedies.
