Former US President Barack Obama has paid tribute to his step-grandmother, Sarah Obama, who has died in Kenya at the age of 99.
She was the matriarch of the family and raised his father.
Mr Obama called her the bridge to his past and a constant, stabilising force.
For decades, Sarah Obama ran a foundation in Kenya to help orphans and girls receive an education, something she felt strongly about as she had no formal schooling herself.
My family and I are mourning the loss of our beloved grandmother, Sarah Ogwel Onyango Obama, affectionately known to many as “Mama Sarah” but known to us as “Dani” or Granny. We will miss her dearly, but we’ll celebrate with gratitude her long and remarkable life. pic.twitter.com/avDY4f1PVu
