A fresh internal dispute has surfaced within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race, following a sharp response from the campaign team of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to comments made by fellow aspirant Kennedy Agyapong.

The controversy stems from a recent video circulating online in which Mr Agyapong allegedly accused Dr Bawumia of making remarks about the health of the late Albert Adu Boahen, as well as influencing a decision not to contest the 1996 NPP presidential primaries.

The Bawumia Campaign has flatly rejected those claims, describing them as false, misleading, and harmful, and insisting that no such statements were ever made by the former Vice President.

“For absolute clarity, Dr Bawumia has never made the statements that have been attributed to him,” the campaign said.

The response was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, and signed by Nana Akomea, Chairman of Campaign Communications.

Beyond disputing the substance of the allegations, the campaign expressed concern about what it described as an escalation of personal attacks within the party’s internal contest, warning that such conduct risks distracting from substantive debate and weakening party cohesion.

“In our political discourse, accuracy matters. Words also matter,” the statement noted, adding that wrongful attributions can mislead the public and unnecessarily inflame tensions within the NPP.

The campaign also took issue with Mr Agyapong’s decision to label Dr Bawumia a liar and question his suitability for leadership, arguing that such character attacks undermine respectful political engagement.

To reinforce its position, the Bawumia Campaign challenged Mr Agyapong to present audio or video evidence to back his claims if they are genuine.

At the heart of the response, the campaign said, is Dr Bawumia’s belief that leadership should be grounded in truth, restraint, and civility, even in the midst of competitive political contests.

“As leaders, we must always state our views devoid of tantrums and personal insults while maintaining truthfulness, decorum, and restraint at all times,” the statement said.

In light of the allegations, the campaign has formally called on Kennedy Agyapong to issue an immediate apology to Dr Bawumia for the claims made against him.

The statement concluded by urging all party actors to prioritise unity and responsible communication as the NPP’s flagbearer race intensifies.
