Dr Mahamudu Bawumia speaking on Ghana’s peace and national unity

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has warned that safeguarding Ghana’s peace and national unity must remain a top priority, even as he congratulated President John Dramani Mahama on completing his first year in office.

In a New Year message, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful said the mandate entrusted to President Mahama by Ghanaians is a sacred responsibility that must be discharged with vigilance, particularly in protecting the country’s democratic and security foundations.

Dr Bawumia cautioned that Ghana’s long-standing reputation as a beacon of stability in a volatile sub-region cannot be taken for granted. He noted that emerging security concerns and pockets of unrest signal the need for renewed commitment to peace, stability and national cohesion.

Referencing the 2025 Global Peace Index, which ranked Ghana 60th globally and seventh in Sub-Saharan Africa, the former Vice President said the decline in rankings should serve as an early warning. According to him, the figures point to growing security pressures that require deliberate and sustained attention.

He further observed that the Mahama administration inherited a foundation that was solid in many respects, stressing that national progress depends on strengthening existing structures rather than allowing them to weaken.

Dr Bawumia said protecting peace and unity remains essential to Ghana’s democratic development and long-term progress, urging the President to ensure that the trust placed in him by the Ghanaian people is not undermined.

He concluded by congratulating President Mahama on his first year in office and wishing him well as he continues to steer the affairs of the nation.
