Prof. Nortey: Bawumia’s Visibility Gives Him Edge in NPP Race

Associate Professor Ezekiel Nortey discusses Global Info Analytics poll on JoyNews, highlighting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s visibility and lead in the NPP flagbearer race.

Associate Professor of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Ghana, Prof. Ezekiel Nortey, has observed that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia currently enjoys the strongest recognition and visibility among contenders in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming internal contest.

During discussions on the latest Global Info Analytics survey, which places Dr. Bawumia in the lead, Prof. Nortey explained that the former Vice President’s background and experience give him an edge in political visibility and branding.

“He is the most marketed person currently in the NPP. None of the aspirants, apart from him, has appeared on the ballot paper as a presidential candidate before. So that alone gives him leverage,” Prof. Nortey said on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Friday.

He cautioned, however, that visibility does not always guarantee electoral success. “What we are doing now is like influencing an outcome that is yet to come. People may say, ‘Oh Bawumia is leading, so let’s vote for him,’ or the current discussion that he is on top may push others to align with him. We should be careful about that,” he warned.

The conversation comes as debate grows over the credibility and impact of the Global Info Analytics poll, which indicates that Dr. Bawumia is well ahead of his competitors.

The poll results released on August 21, 2025, show Dr. Bawumia commanding 52% support among NPP delegates in the lead-up to the party’s presidential primaries.

His closest rival, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, follows with 17%. Other aspirants, including Dr. Bryan Acheampong with 3%, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum with 1%, and Kwabena Agyapong, Boakye Agyarko, and Addai Nimo with less than 1%, lag far behind.
