As anticipation builds toward the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries on 31 January, a member of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team says the former Vice-President has already won the confidence of party delegates.
Speaking on JoyNews’ News Desk, Kweku Quarshie said feedback from across the party suggests delegates are rallying strongly behind Dr Bawumia, whom they see as best placed to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.
According to him, delegates are less focused on rhetoric and more interested in practical leadership qualities that directly address their needs.
“They want a leader who listens, understands their concerns, and responds in a meaningful way,” he said, noting that Dr Bawumia’s proposed delegate welfare system resonates strongly within the party.
Mr Quarshie explained that the simplicity and practicality of the welfare proposals have helped distinguish Dr Bawumia from other contenders.
“It is commonsensical and workable, and that is why delegates are ready to embrace it,” he added.
Beyond policy, he said personal character is a major factor influencing delegate choice. Humility, openness, and respect for all party members, regardless of background, are traits delegates believe Dr Bawumia embodies.
“They want someone humble enough to listen, someone who doesn’t judge you by how you dress or how wealthy you are. That is exactly what they see in Dr Bawumia,” he said.
Mr Quarshie also pointed to Dr Bawumia’s record in government, arguing that his tenure as Vice-President demonstrates innovative and forward-thinking leadership.
“He has shown radical ideas that are already making a difference for the country,” he noted.
On the expected outcome of the primaries, Mr Quarshie expressed confidence that Dr Bawumia would not only win but do so with a stronger mandate than in the party’s 2023 presidential contest.
“We believe the endorsement this time will be even more emphatic,” he said.
The comments come as NPP delegates across the country prepare to elect a flagbearer who will lead the party into the 2028 general elections, with the January 31 primaries widely seen as a defining moment for the party’s future.
