Former Agric Minister Bryan Acheampong claims he financed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s NPP flagbearership campaign.

Former Minister for Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has alleged that he personally financed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s successful bid to become the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer.

Speaking about his role in the party’s recent internal contest, Dr. Acheampong stated that he bore the full financial cost of Bawumia’s campaign in the Eastern Region during the 2023 primaries. He claimed to have provided significant resources to secure victory for the Vice President.

Dr. Bawumia did not contribute a penny during the 2023 presidential primaries in the Eastern Region. I paid every single penny for him to become the party’s flagbearer, including giving each constituency executive $1,500. In the 2024 elections, I funded Dr. Bawumia more than I funded Akufo-Addo,” Dr. Acheampong reportedly said.

The 2023 NPP flagbearership race was a fiercely contested one, with Dr. Bawumia emerging victorious over prominent party figures such as Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addai-Nimoh. His triumph secured him the position to lead the NPP into the 2024 general elections.

Dr. Acheampong’s claims have sparked heated political discussions, as questions continue to arise about the financing of internal party contests and the extent of influence wielded by major financiers within the NPP.
