In a bid to promote digital inclusion and economic growth, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, has outlined an ambitious strategy to bridge the technology gap in Ghana. Speaking to youth groups in Accra on Sunday, November 3, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his commitment to abolishing the E-Levy and significantly reducing import duties on mobile phones, aiming to make smartphones more affordable for all Ghanaians.
The candidate’s proposals go beyond tax cuts, signaling a larger vision to boost digital access across the nation. “We will remove import duties on mobile phones until we establish a manufacturing capacity here in Ghana,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “Our goal is to ensure every Ghanaian has affordable access to smartphones. We also intend to abolish the E-Levy as part of our drive toward a digital economy.”
Dr. Bawumia’s digital inclusion strategy seeks to empower citizens by making technology more accessible, which he argues will spur economic development, create jobs, and foster innovation. Additionally, he has pledged to implement a tax amnesty program for businesses, providing relief from overdue taxes to encourage investment and growth.
