The long-standing electoral tussle in the Dome Kwabenya Constituency has finally been resolved, with the Electoral Commission (EC) declaring Faustina Akurugu Elikplim of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the Member of Parliament-elect. This announcement concludes weeks of tension and political wrangling between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The EC’s Chairperson, Jean Mensa, made the declaration during an emergency session of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on Tuesday, December 31. She emphasized that the decision followed an exhaustive review process aimed at ensuring the integrity of the results.

“We have meticulously examined every aspect of the electoral process in Dome Kwabenya. Today, we are confident that the final outcome accurately reflects the will of the people. Our responsibility is to ensure that democracy prevails, and the choice of the people is upheld without bias,” Mensa stated.

The re-collation of votes was pivotal in determining the winner. Faustina Akurugu Elikplim secured 50,967 votes, narrowly defeating her closest rival, Mike Oquaye Junior of the NPP, who garnered 50,669 votes—a difference of just 298 votes.

The EC’s decision has effectively cancelled a planned re-run at an outstanding polling station, which had been a bone of contention between the two parties. According to the EC, the re-collation provided a conclusive and transparent resolution.

The announcement marks the end of an intense political battle over the Dome Kwabenya parliamentary seat. The NPP had earlier contested the results, citing irregularities at certain polling stations, but the EC’s declaration has now affirmed the NDC’s victory.

For the NDC, this win is not just a constituency victory but a boost to their parliamentary presence. For Faustina Akurugu Elikplim, it is the beginning of her tenure as a legislator representing one of Ghana’s key constituencies.

The decision brings clarity and relief to constituents who had been caught in the uncertainty of the prolonged dispute. It also underscores the importance of electoral transparency and adherence to democratic principles.

As Dome Kwabenya turns a new page, all eyes will be on Akurugu Elikplim as she steps into her role, with expectations high for her to deliver on her campaign promises and champion the development of the constituency.
