FrimpongThe Member of Parliament for Effutu in the Central Region, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin is cautioning parliamentary aspirants of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be wary of delegates ahead of Saturday’s primaries.
Sharing his experience in previous elections, the Effutu MP recounted how his personal driver who is also a paternal cousin, painfully voted against him during the 2008 parliamentary primaries.
According to him, his cousin, who was a delegate, had unknowingly left his camp after he [Afenyo Markin] declined a request by the young man for him to be taken to London to visit his girlf friend.
Speaking on Okay FM on Wednesday, June 17, 2020, the MP who was acclaimed on Tuesday to contest on the governing party’s ticket for the 2020 polls advised his fellow aspirants to brace themselves for surprises since delegates cannot be trusted.
“Sir John said fear delegates and it’s true. Let me share this personal experience, during the 2008 primaries, my personal driver who takes me everywhere was a delegate. He is also my cousin, my paternal cousin.”
“I took a visa for him, took him abroad and back. When I started my first taxi business in Accra, I gave him one of the ‘work and pay’ taxis to drive so he can make some money. One day he told me he has a lady in London he wants to visit the lady, I told him to be patient so we finish the primaries then I’ll take him.”
“There was a day I went to Winneba before the primaries and someone asked me whether I was sure my driver was on my side, I was so confident and said yes he was. To cut the long story short, my driver left my camp and on the primaries day, he looked at me and voted against me. Someone I’ve taken abroad and given him a car, he voted against me so we’ve passed through so many experiences in politics so no one should be shocked [on Saturday],” he said.
