A Ghana Air Force (GAF) helicopter carrying eight people has been reported missing after taking off from Accra on the morning of Tuesday, August 6, en route to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
According to an official statement from the Ghana Armed Forces, the Z-9 helicopter departed the capital at 9:12 a.m. but lost radar contact during its flight.
“All efforts are being made to establish contact,” the GAF noted. “Further details will be communicated soon.”
The missing aircraft is reported to have had three crew members and five passengers on board. Their identities have not yet been released to the public.
Authorities have launched a full-scale search and rescue operation to determine the helicopter’s whereabouts and the condition of those onboard. Military and emergency teams are coordinating efforts across multiple regions, focusing on the route between Accra and Obuasi.
This incident has raised nationwide concern, especially as the Z-9 helicopter is a key component of Ghana’s air surveillance and transport fleet.
There has been an outpouring of concern on social media, with many Ghanaians praying for the safe return of those on board. Government officials have also urged the public to remain calm and await official updates.
