The newly established Board of Trustees of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has been reassured by the Finance Minister of Ghana, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, that the government has paid off all outstanding debts to the Fund.

Speaking at the Accra inauguration ceremony, Dr. Forson reaffirmed the government’s dedication to maintaining Ghana’s pension system and attested to the full settlement of all outstanding debts owed to SSNIT.

“I want to assure you that the government is current on all payments due to SSNIT. We are determined to continue honoring these obligations to safeguard the pensions of Ghanaian workers,” he said.

Mr. Kwesi Afreh Biney, the Director-General of SSNIT, verified the payments and stated that the government had met all of its present commitments in addition to paying off the arrears it inherited.

The commitment from the finance minister coincides with heightened public scrutiny of pension fund administration and further demands for SSNIT’s investment decisions to be transparent. It is anticipated that his comments will increase public trust in the Fund’s financial standing and the government’s commitment to safeguarding employees’ retirement benefits.

Nana Ansah Sasraku III is the chair of the recently established SSNIT Board, which is made up of representatives from employer, labor, and government organizations. The Board’s duties include overseeing the Fund strategically and making sure it is run well.

At a time when public trust in pension administration is crucial, the Board is expected to give SSNIT strategic direction and oversight.

The Board will be crucial to maintaining the long-term survival of one of Ghana’s most important social protection organizations, with an emphasis on sustainability.
