GRNMA Warns Of Possible Strike If Government Fails To Fulfil Agreement

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has warned that it could return to strike action if the government does not fulfill its promises on improving working conditions.

This warning comes after GRNMA suspended its nationwide strike on Friday, June 13. The strike began on June 2 and was put on hold after talks with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and government officials.

According to GRNMA’s First Vice President, Samuel Alagkora Akolgo, the union is hopeful but cautious. He spoke on Newsfile on Saturday, June 14, just a day after the strike was suspended.

“We don’t want to speculate. The members of the Health Committee are men of integrity. We believe they will keep their word,” he said.

The government has said that the GH¢2 billion needed to meet the nurses’ demands was not planned for in the current budget. Instead, it may be included in the 2026 budget.

Still, Mr. Akolgo made it clear that if the government fails to act, the strike could return. “We are not thinking about whether to resume the strike. We remain hopeful that the right thing will be done so nurses and midwives can keep serving Ghanaians,” he said. “But our patience has limits.”

He added that GRNMA suspended the strike in good faith and expects the government to do its part. The earlier strike caused major problems in hospitals across the country. With no money yet released, all eyes are on the upcoming meeting on June 26. That meeting may decide if nurses stay at work or return to the picket lines.
