Haruna Mohammed, Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is pushing for major reforms to Ghana’s Political Parties Act. He believes political parties should be allowed to run lawful businesses to achieve true financial independence.

During an appearance on JoyNews’ AM Show on June 24, he described the current political financing system as outdated. “The laws governing our political environment have been outdated. We need to amend the Political Parties Act to allow parties to do business,” he said.

Mohammed explained that legalizing business operations for parties would help them generate consistent revenue. “When parties can own businesses, they can raise funds to support political activities and strengthen their balance sheets,” he added.

He criticized the ongoing dependence on government support and donations. According to him, this model leaves political parties vulnerable and limits their independence. “We can’t keep relying on the government for funding. We’ve had this debate many times. It’s time to review the Political Parties Act,” he said.

Mohammed called for swift legislative action. He believes the amendment will help political parties operate sustainably and support democracy. “This change will give parties the legal right to do business and run operations that fund their activities,” he concluded.

If Parliament acts on his call, Ghana could see a shift toward more financially stable and independent political institutions.
