AdubianewsDeputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has strongly criticized the Mahama-led administration for its inability to confront the illegal mining menace, commonly known as galamsey.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, June 21, Haruna questioned both the commitment and capacity of the government to handle the growing threat.
He described the current administration as a “settings government,” accusing it of focusing more on appearances than delivering real solutions to Ghana’s pressing issues.
According to him, the Mahama government lacks the gravitas to effectively deal with galamsey, a crisis that continues to damage the country’s environment and economy.
“One thing that is clear to everyone is that this government that we have described as a setting government certainly doesn’t have the gravitas to deal with this galamsey menace,” he stated during the programme.
Haruna emphasized that the fight against galamsey goes beyond policy announcements. It demands bold decisions, strong leadership, and consistent enforcement, qualities he believes the Mahama administration has failed to demonstrate.
His remarks come at a time when public concern over illegal mining is at an all-time high, with many Ghanaians calling for tougher action.
The NPP executive maintained that only a serious and proactive government can reverse the damage caused by illegal mining. In his view, the Mahama government has repeatedly shown it is not up to the task.
