Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has accused President John Dramani Mahama of abandoning the Ghanaian people in the battle against illegal mining, widely known as galamsey.
He made the comments during an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, June 21. Haruna stated that President Mahama has shown little political will to stop the environmental destruction caused by galamsey, even as public concern continues to grow.
He highlighted the damage to water bodies, farmlands, and livelihoods across the country and questioned the President’s silence on the issue.
“The President has simply turned his back on Ghanaians on this critical issue. He campaigned on change, yet remains silent as our forests and rivers disappear,” Haruna said.
He argued that President Mahama’s inaction goes against his promises of sustainable development and responsible leadership. According to him, true leadership requires tough decisions, especially when the nation’s environment is at stake.
“We cannot continue to watch while galamsey operators destroy our environment. Leadership means taking difficult decisions, and on this, the President has failed,” Haruna added.
He called on civil society groups, traditional leaders, and the general public to demand accountability from the Mahama-led administration. Haruna insisted that Ghanaians need clear, urgent action, not more promises. “The time for excuses is over, what Ghanaians need now is action,” he concluded.
