The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has issued a stern warning to the public against bribing police officers, saying such attempts will end in disgrace as officers now prioritise professionalism and merit-based advancement.
The warning came during a special event in Accra where Ghanaian gospel musician Grace Ashly presented a song dedicated to the Ghana Police Service (GPS). The IGP described the gesture as a significant morale booster and assured her that the honour would not be taken lightly.
“I can assure you that if you attempt to bribe a police officer, he will disgrace you. He wants promotion,” he said, stressing that corruption is being decisively confronted under the current administration.
Mr Yohuno explained that the police service is undergoing reforms aimed at strengthening integrity and professionalism. He noted that the era when promotions were delayed until after retirement or death is over, and that timely promotions have helped improve motivation and morale across the force.
He commended officers for their dedication, praising regional commanders and personnel nationwide for their gallant performance over the past year, which he said has contributed to Ghana’s relative calm and security.
The IGP added that the progress achieved so far is only the beginning, assuring officers that the service would continue to strengthen efforts to sustain peace and safety across the country. He said the Ghana Police Service is positioning itself to become one of the best in the world, with a renewed image that future generations would be proud to uphold.
“We want our glory back,” he said, adding that the Service is committed to earning the trust and respect of every Ghanaian, from the smallest village to the largest city.
Grace Ashly explained that the song was inspired by a personal experience that deepened her appreciation for the police. She recounted how she once found herself in a frightening situation while working alone at night and reached out to the police for help.
“What I received was more than help. I received comfort,” she said, adding that the experience made her realise that creativity and dreams thrive because others stand watch.
She praised the Ghana Police Service for protecting not only her life but also her dream, voice, and music.
Mrs Ashly also commended the police for their resilience amid evolving security challenges. She referenced recent operations, including the dismantling of a human trafficking network in Ho, the interception of a major narcotics consignment in Tema, and the arrest of a notorious highway robbery syndicate this year.
She also cited earlier efforts such as Operation Cobra in September 2025, arrests of human trafficking suspects in Ashaiman, the neutralisation of armed robbery threats in Tema, major weapons trafficking arrests in the Northern Region, and CID-led murder and robbery arrests between 2024 and 2025.
She further praised the Service for combating cybercrime and financial fraud through international collaboration.
“These efforts remind us that policing is not merely a profession, but a calling that demands vigilance, sacrifice and courage,” she said.
Describing the song as more than music, Mrs Ashly said it is a message of appreciation, encouragement and solidarity for officers whose sacrifices often go unseen. She concluded by saluting the IGP for his leadership and thanking the police management board and all personnel of the Ghana Police Service.
