IMANI Africa President Franklin Cudjoe has linked Ghana’s current transport crisis to delays in completing major road projects, accusing the former Akufo-Addo government of contributing to the problem through mismanagement and corruption.
The comments were made during an interview on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Saturday, amid growing commuter distress caused by the scarcity of commercial vehicles and long queues across the country.
Mr Cudjoe argued that the lack of functional road infrastructure has made commuting difficult and costly, adding that the transport challenges would have been significantly reduced if key roads had been completed on time.
He highlighted the Ofankor–Nsawam and Cape Coast roads as critical projects that have dragged on for years, describing the delay as “unconscionable.”
According to him, the previous administration allocated funds meant to fast-track the Ofankor–Nsawam road but diverted the money to smaller road projects and other uses. He accused officials of sharing the funds “like toffees” and deliberately undermining public infrastructure through corruption.
Mr Cudjoe said the delays are not only a sign of incompetence but also a deliberate attempt to weaken the country’s infrastructure, insisting that the road should have been completed long ago to relieve pressure on commuters.
He urged the Mahama government to prioritise road rehabilitation and construction, saying that improving the road network would directly ease the transport challenges.
“The state should rather focus on fixing the roads, making roads motorable,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Vice President Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has assured the public that the government is taking steps to address the transport issues affecting commuters across the country.
