John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is poised to reclaim Ghana’s presidency after receiving a concession call from his main contender, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The announcement came as provisional results from the December 7 elections showed Mahama leading decisively in the presidential race, with several NDC parliamentary candidates also securing key victories across the country.
In a display of statesmanship, Dr. Bawumia publicly acknowledged Mahama’s victory and congratulated him during an earlier address to his supporters. Emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and upholding democratic values, Bawumia urged NPP loyalists to remain calm and focus on the party’s future.
“I have called President-elect John Dramani Mahama to congratulate him on his victory,” Bawumia stated. “The people have spoken, and we must respect their will. Let us remain peaceful and united as a nation.”
Mahama confirmed the call in a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he expressed gratitude to Bawumia and to the Ghanaian people.
“I have, this morning, received a congratulatory call from my brother Dr. @MBawumia, following my emphatic victory in Saturday’s election. Thank you, Ghana,” he wrote.
While the Electoral Commission (EC) is yet to make an official declaration, data from collation centers nationwide shows Mahama with a commanding lead. Analysts attribute his success to promises of economic recovery, transparency in governance, and a focus on unity during his campaign.
The NDC leadership has also urged its supporters to remain composed as they await the EC’s formal announcement.
If confirmed, this victory will mark Mahama’s return to the presidency after eight years, a significant political milestone in Ghana’s democratic history. The win underscores his appeal to voters eager for change and his ability to galvanize support across diverse demographics.
Mahama has pledged to prioritize national unity and economic revitalization during his upcoming tenure. In his brief remarks, he extended an olive branch to all Ghanaians, including his political opponents, stating his commitment to fostering inclusivity and collaboration.
As the nation awaits the EC’s final confirmation, Mahama’s impending return signals a new chapter in Ghana’s political landscape, with a focus on healing, rebuilding, and delivering on the promises that resonated with the electorate.
