President John Mahama has directed the Auditor-General to conduct a forensic audit into Ghana’s hosting of the 13th All-African Games in Accra.
A statement from the Presidency on Tuesday, November 4, said the directive follows findings from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and reflects the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the prudent use of public funds.
The audit, according to the statement, will examine all financial and operational aspects of the Games, including procurement, expenditure, infrastructure, and post-event management.
It will specifically review:
Procurement and Contracting Processes: Tender procedures, contractor selection, and compliance with the Public Procurement Act.
Financial Management: Funding sources, disbursements, and sponsorships.
Infrastructure Delivery: Timelines, cost variations, and value-for-money outcomes.
President Mahama further directed that the audit evaluate the performance and coordination of all government agencies and committees involved in organising the Games. The Auditor-General is expected to submit the final report by mid-December 2025.
The 13th African Games, held in Accra from March 8 to 23, 2024, attracted public criticism over its high costs, with over $195 million reportedly spent on infrastructure and an additional $46 million needed for operations.
