Claims made by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson about the alleged diversion of road infrastructure loans have sparked a strong backlash from the Minority in Parliament, who say the accusations are both “false and misleading.”
Responding in a statement, Ranking Member on the Roads and Transport Committee, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, dismissed the minister’s suggestion that funds earmarked for the Ofankor–Nsawam and Suame Interchange projects were misused by the previous government.
According to Mr. Nyarko, the $750 million Afreximbank facility secured in 2022 was transparently structured, with disbursements tied to specific milestones under a well-defined infrastructure plan. Projects earmarked for funding included the Flowerpot Interchange, Borteyman dualisation, and key bypasses along the Accra–Kumasi corridor.
“It was a programme-based facility with phased disbursements tied to progress,” he explained.
The Minority insists the delay in completing these projects is a direct result of the current administration’s failure to release counterpart funding and honour contractor payments. This has led to a loss of confidence in the sector, stalled works, and swelling arrears.
“To now suggest that the money was diverted is not only disingenuous, it is an attempt to rewrite the record for political gain,” Mr. Nyarko added. “Let’s speak facts. Let’s be truthful to Ghanaians.”
The Minority called for an end to what they describe as blame games and political spin, urging the government to focus on resuming the stalled road works.
“Instead of politicising the past, they should focus on delivering the roads Ghanaians were promised,” Nyarko concluded. “The facts are clear. The responsibility is theirs.”
