The Minority in Parliament has called on the government to remove the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr. Randy Abbey, over the ongoing challenges facing the cocoa sector.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, February 12, Ranking Member on Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, said recent developments in the sector stem from decisions taken by COCOBOD leadership.
He therefore appealed to the President to intervene. “Respectfully, we ask the President to relieve the COCOBOD CEO of his responsibilities at this point in time,” he stated.
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah argued that cocoa farmers are bearing the burden of policy decisions and should be shielded, as was done in previous administrations when global prices dropped.
According to him, the current payment arrangement is far below expectations.
“The government should absorb the cost and protect the cocoa farmer by restoring at least GH₵3,625 they promised. The GH₵2,800 or so being offered is unacceptable,” he said.
The Minority warned that growing frustration among cocoa farmers could soon trigger nationwide protests.
“We are receiving messages from cocoa farmers who say they will demonstrate in a number of days. If they do, this caucus will join them on the streets,” he hinted.
The calls come after the government announced a new farmgate cocoa price for the 2025–2026 season:
GH₵41,392 per tonne
GH₵2,587 per bag
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson explained that the adjustment is intended to cushion farmers against falling global cocoa prices while sustaining Ghana’s competitiveness on the international market.
He emphasized that the revision aims to protect farmer incomes and maintain stability in the cocoa industry.
