Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the 2024 Bawumia Campaign, has raised serious concerns over what he sees as a calculated move by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to unseat Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. He believes the attempt to remove her from office poses a significant threat to Ghana’s democratic foundations and judicial independence.
In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Aboagye criticized what he called the nation’s disturbing silence on the matter. He described the situation as setting a dangerous precedent that could weaken the institutional integrity of the judiciary.
According to him, the Chief Justice’s recent decision to publicly address the issue highlights the severity of the situation and reflects a deeper failure within the system.
Chief Justice Torkornoo was suspended by President John Mahama in April 2025 after the Council of State confirmed a prima facie case against her.
On June 25, she voiced concerns over the legality and fairness of the petition for her removal, calling it politically motivated. Miracles Aboagye echoed her concerns, stating that the issue transcends her individual case and touches the core of Ghana’s justice system.
He further questioned the government’s commitment to due process and took aim at the Minister for Government Communications for adopting what he viewed as a combative stance.
Aboagye warned that if the NDC’s effort to remove the Chief Justice succeeds, it could undermine the rule of law and erode public trust in the judiciary for years to come.
