Mustapha Gbande says NDC will win Akwatia by-election

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has declared that the party is poised to win the upcoming by-election in Akwatia, citing discontent with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a lack of development in the area.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Gbande pointed to widespread dissatisfaction in the Akwatia constituency and across the country as evidence that the NDC has the upper hand.

“We will win the Akwatia by-election. There is no development there. The Peace Council should intervene ahead of the elections to avoid any form of violence,” Gbande said.

He further urged the Electoral Commission to carry out a transparent and non-partisan recruitment and operational process, stressing that doing so would help rebuild trust in Ghana’s electoral system.

The by-election follows the passing of sitting MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, a respected member of the NPP, on July 7. The Electoral Commission is yet to announce a date for the vote, which will fill the vacant seat in the Akwatia constituency.

Mr. Kumi’s death has been described as a major loss to both Parliament and his party. He was widely known for his thoughtful contributions to governance and national development.

“His insight and commitment to parliamentary work will be sorely missed,” a parliamentary colleague noted.

As political parties prepare for the by-election, Akwatia is shaping up to be a key battleground, with both the NDC and NPP expected to fight fiercely for control of the seat.
