Ghana’s Parliament will begin holding sittings on Mondays and Saturdays starting Monday, July 7, 2025, to fast-track urgent legislative business before the House adjourns sine die.
This was announced by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who explained the decision while presenting the Business Statement for the seventh week of the session, which ends on Saturday, July 12, 2025.
According to Ayariga, the additional sittings will allow Legislative Instruments (LIs) that are nearing maturity to be considered in time. He noted that the move is essential to prevent delays in the implementation of key regulations before Parliament rises.
Ayariga, who also chairs the Business Committee, revealed that 55 Ministers and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, are scheduled to appear before Parliament to respond to questions throughout the week.
He added that new Bills may be introduced and, where necessary, urgent ones could be taken through all stages in a single day in line with Standing Order 160. Papers are also expected to be laid, committee reports presented, and motions debated with potential resolutions passed.
“In accordance with Standing Order 216(2), and subject to Standing Order 67, the Committee submits to the House the order in which the business shall be taken,” Ayariga stated.
Minority Leader Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, commenting on the Business Statement, called on the Majority Leader to ensure that Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa appears before the House. He urged that she be scheduled to brief Parliament on the rerun of parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
The decision to extend sitting days underlines Parliament’s intent to clear outstanding work efficiently and respond to pressing matters before recess.
