President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has eulogized the late former President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, describing him as a statesman, humanitarian, and tireless advocate for democracy and human rights.

Jimmy Carter passed away at the age of 100 on Sunday, as confirmed by the Carter Center, which he founded to promote democracy and human rights globally. The former peanut farmer turned president lived longer than any other U.S. president and celebrated his centenary in October. He served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981.

In a heartfelt statement, President Akufo-Addo highlighted Carter’s legacy of compassion and humility, which transcended borders and deeply resonated with the people of Ghana.

“Statesman, humanitarian, peacemaker, advocate for democracy and human rights, tireless champion for the underprivileged, and a God-fearing man, President Jimmy Carter leaves behind a legacy that exemplifies compassion, humility, and an unalloyed commitment to making the world a better place,” President Akufo-Addo remarked.

President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the profound impact of Carter’s humanitarian work in Ghana, particularly through the Carter Center’s efforts to eradicate guinea worm disease. These initiatives brought significant relief to countless Ghanaian communities, embodying Carter’s empathy and global commitment to improving lives.

He also emphasized Carter’s devotion to democracy and human rights, noting how it aligned with Ghana’s own values and aspirations.

“His empathy and humanity resonated deeply across borders, leaving a legacy of hope and healing in places far from his homeland, including Ghana,” the President said.

President Akufo-Addo extended his condolences to the Carter family, President Joe Biden, and the government and people of the United States. He expressed Ghana’s solidarity with the American people during this time of mourning.

“To the Carter family, and to President Joe Biden, the government and people of the United States of America, I, on behalf of the people and government of Ghana, extend our heartfelt condolences. May his soul rest in perfect peace in the Bosom of the Almighty until the Last Day of the Resurrection when we shall all meet again. Amen.”

Jimmy Carter’s enduring legacy as a humanitarian, advocate, and peacemaker remains a source of inspiration to many, including those in Ghana, where his life’s work has left a lasting impact.
