Legal practitioner and Head of Ahmed Legal Consult, Musa Ahmed, has strongly criticised suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo for addressing her impeachment proceedings in a public press conference. He described her actions as unconstitutional, politically motivated, and damaging to the integrity of the judiciary.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, Mr. Ahmed stated that as the highest-ranking judicial officer in the country, Justice Torkornoo should have upheld legal and institutional processes rather than attempting to influence public opinion. “For me, she’s not setting any good example for anybody to follow,” he said, adding that her conduct failed to reflect the standards expected of a Chief Justice.
Ahmed further argued that if the suspended Chief Justice believed her rights were being violated, the proper course of action would have been to challenge the process legally rather than publicly narrating a “one-sided story.”
He noted that her statements prejudiced the proceedings and undermined the constitutional requirement for such matters to be heard in camera, as stated under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
Echoing sentiments previously expressed by Victoria Bright and Senyo Hosi, Ahmed maintained that the press conference was inappropriate and unlawful. “You are seeking to do politics, you are seeking to prejudice the outcome of the case, which to me is not constitutional,” he said.
He stressed that the public cannot fairly judge the issue without hearing both sides, especially the committee’s, which has yet to respond. “I will not accept her one-sided information, accusations that she made, to make an informed decision on this matter,” he concluded.
