AdubianewsEnergy analyst Kwadwo Poku has called for urgent legislative reforms to combat illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, which continues to threaten Ghana’s rivers and environment. Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, he stressed the need for tailored laws and dedicated courts to address the crisis.
Mr. Poku argued that the existing legal framework is inadequate and does little to deter illegal miners who continue to operate along riverbanks and within protected zones. Despite prohibitions on mining near water bodies, enforcement remains inconsistent, allowing illegal operations to thrive.
He expressed concern over the lack of legal consequences for offenders, questioning what happens when illegal miners are apprehended. He emphasized that the judiciary must take a firmer stance against violators, and authorities must implement laws that directly target galamsey activities.
Highlighting the influx of illegal excavators into the country, Mr. Poku pointed out the high number of machinery stuck at the ports due to clearance restrictions. He dismissed the notion that small-scale miners were behind the imports, hinting at deeper networks behind the trade.
The analyst revealed that he had directly reached out to Lands Minister Kofi Buah, urging him to criminalize ownership of equipment used in illegal mining and establish special legal systems for prosecution. He maintained that stricter penalties, including jail time for owners of excavators found at galamsey sites, would serve as an effective deterrent.
While acknowledging some efforts at the community level, he criticized the lack of follow-through after arrests. Without swift legal action and systemic change, he warned that galamsey would continue to destroy Ghana’s natural resources.
