Ongoing Eastern Corridor construction on the Tema to Damango road

As part of efforts to modernize Ghana’s road infrastructure, the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has disclosed plans to upgrade the stretch from Tema to Damango into a first-class road under the NDC administration’s Big Push agenda.

He described the Tema to Damango road as a strategic national asset that must meet the highest standards. “From Tema to Oti Damango must be first-class alphast, that is what we are aiming to do currently,” the minister stated. According to him, the government aims to complete the project within the next two years. “President Mahama says that, within two years, we should complete fully the Eastern Corridor road,” he added.

The Eastern Corridor road serves as a vital link connecting southern Ghana to the northernmost parts of the country. Starting from Tema in the Greater Accra Region, the corridor cuts across towns like Asikuma, Peki, Hohoe, Nkwanta, Damango, and Bimbilla, spanning the Volta and Oti regions.

This road is expected to become an economic lifeline for the eastern zone by facilitating smoother transportation of goods and people, improving access to markets, and accelerating growth in agriculture and commerce for many previously isolated communities.

Once completed, the project will not only enhance internal trade but also provide a quicker route from the Tema Port to Burkina Faso, making cross-border logistics more efficient.

However, the Eastern Corridor road has experienced years of delay due to fluctuating political focus and inconsistent support, raising concerns over the pace of development.
