“They Are Lying” – UG Student Dismisses COVID-19 Resurgence as GHS Issues Caution

A University of Ghana student has rejected claims of a COVID-19 outbreak on campus. He believes the report is a strategy by school authorities to cancel student celebrations.

“They are lying,” he said. “They just want to shut down our events and control everything.” His comments come shortly after the university suspended all social activities, including the much-anticipated hall week celebrations.

Some students support his view. They say the outbreak announcement feels suspicious, especially with hall week approaching. Online, videos show students questioning the decision and calling for proof. The timing, they argue, is too convenient to be a coincidence.

But the Ghana Health Service (GHS) insists COVID-19 remains a real threat. Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, Director of Public Health, addressed the issue on Citi FM. “COVID has never left Ghana. We’re still detecting cases through our surveillance systems,” he said. He explained that the recent spike on campus may have come from a social gathering.

He backed the university’s move to suspend events, calling it a smart decision. “It’s better to act early than wait for things to get worse,” he added. He also urged other institutions to bring back basic safety protocols like handwashing, mask use, and early reporting of symptoms.

While some students remain skeptical, others have accepted the call for caution. Health officials continue to advise the public to stay alert. They warn that ignoring the virus could lead to wider outbreaks, especially in densely populated areas like campuses.
