Diella TekuThe football community in Uganda was shaken as friends and family gathered on October 30 to mourn the loss of Benjamin Ndyamuhaki, a 36-year-old Manchester United supporter, who was allegedly killed in a dispute with an Arsenal fan over a recent match. Ndyamuhaki, known for his warmth and dedication to his family, was laid to rest in Kabungo Cell, Katenga Parish, in Kabale District.
The incident occurred on October 27 at a local video hall in Kyobugombe Trading Centre, where fans had gathered to watch an English Premier League match between Arsenal and Liverpool, which ended in a 2-2 draw. When Liverpool scored a late equalizer, Ndyamuhaki reportedly celebrated by throwing popcorn, an act that led to a heated argument with Arsenal fan Onan Byampangi. The altercation escalated, and Byampangi allegedly struck Ndyamuhaki with a stick, leading to his hospitalization and eventual death.
At the funeral, Ndyamuhaki’s elder brother, Kenneth Atukwase, paid tribute to his late sibling, describing him as a devoted and hardworking family man. The community remembered him fondly, with Mr. Dan Kasaku of the Rukiga Taxi Drivers Association reflecting on Ndyamuhaki’s reputation for humility and cooperation.
In a call for peace, mourner Barnard Tumuhimbise urged the family to leave justice in God’s hands rather than seeking revenge. Local leaders echoed similar sentiments, with Rev. Michael Asiimwe advising fans to avoid situations that might trigger anger during matches.
On the other hand, Kabale District authorities have intensified efforts to locate Byampangi, who fled the scene and was last reported to be in Ntungamo.
