The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho has officially been renamed the Professor John Evans Atta Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences, in honor of Ghana’s late President and former Vice Chancellor. The announcement was made on May 28, 2025, by Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu during the swearing-in of the university’s new Governing Council.

This renaming recognizes the instrumental role the late President Mills played in establishing the university. As a leader deeply committed to advancing education and healthcare, Mills initiated the creation of UHAS during his presidency. The university was officially established in 2011 through an Act of Parliament and began operations in 2012.

“President Mills believed in a Ghana where access to quality health education was not a luxury but a right,” Minister Iddrisu said. “This renaming ensures that his legacy in health and education will live on for generations.”

Professor Kodzo Gavua, Chair of the new Governing Council, welcomed the decision and pledged to continue upholding the university’s mission of academic excellence and national development.

Located across two campuses in Ho and Hohoe, UHAS is Ghana’s first public university solely dedicated to health sciences. It currently houses nine schools and three institutes, including the Fred Newton Binka School of Public Health and the Institute of Health Research.

The renaming is not just symbolic—it marks a renewed commitment to the values and vision President Mills stood for. It is also a statement of national gratitude for a leader whose policies continue to shape Ghana’s education and healthcare sectors.

As the university moves forward under its new name, stakeholders say they hope it becomes a beacon for health education, not just in Ghana, but across the continent.
