Diella TekuUkraine is taking a bold step to strengthen its ties with African nations by launching a program to provide ready-to-eat meals for schools in Ghana and other countries on the continent. The initiative, led by Ukraine’s First Lady and announced by Maksym Subkh, Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa, aims to tackle food security challenges while fostering sustainable local production.
The announcement comes ahead of this weekend’s Grain Summit, a platform dedicated to addressing food security and agricultural capacity across Africa. Mr. Subkh revealed that the program is inspired by a similar initiative already operational in Ukraine, reflecting the nation’s commitment to sharing innovative solutions despite its ongoing war with Russia.
The school meals program is not limited to food provision. Ukraine intends to share technology and expertise with its African partners, enabling local production and promoting long-term self-reliance. This aligns with the broader objective of empowering African countries to achieve food security through collaboration and capacity building.
Ukraine’s support for Africa has been evident during the ongoing conflict, with the country donating 300,000 metric tonnes of grains to African nations. The Grain Summit is expected to further explore avenues for cooperation, focusing on sustainable agricultural practices and enhanced food supply chains.
While Ukraine demonstrates generosity abroad, it faces monumental challenges at home. The war with Russia has inflicted estimated damages of $1 trillion, including $450 billion in trade losses and over $80 billion in agricultural sector damages.
A significant obstacle to Ukraine’s agricultural recovery is the demining of arable land. Approximately 40,000 square kilometers of farmland are contaminated with landmines—a task that could take over a century to resolve without international assistance.
Mr. Subkh emphasized the importance of collaboration during the summit, highlighting that partnerships between Ukraine and African nations could address shared challenges, including food insecurity and technological development.
The upcoming Grain Summit symbolizes a critical opportunity for Ukraine and Africa to strengthen their collaboration. For Africa, it presents a chance to benefit from Ukrainian expertise and resources. For Ukraine, the partnership reinforces its commitment to global food security and offers a platform to rebuild its agricultural sector with the support of the international community.
This initiative reflects Ukraine’s resilience and its determination to foster global partnerships despite the trials of war, paving the way for mutual growth and sustainable development in the years to come.
