If he will go by his promise, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh will be resigning as Energy Minister in the coming days. This is because he made a promise to resign if the teacher unions are able to provide a document to prove that he was involved in the one teacher one laptop deal.

“I will resign immediately if they are able to provide documents to show that I Matthew Opoku Prempeh signed the contract”. Those were the words of the former minister of education when he met with Kwame Sefa Kayi on Kokrokoo last week.

This was after three teacher unions had accused the education ministry of create, loot and share with regards to the one teacher one laptop initiative. According to Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), the ministry used sole sourcing to procure unregistered and inferior laptops for teachers at a high cost to the teachers.

According to him, the teacher unions had a meeting and decided to procure laptops for their members numbering 350,000. They selected the supplier and specifications of the laptop they wanted. He said the only thing he did as minister was to have Government absorb 70% of the cost after the teacher unions begged him to help.

Napo as he is affectionately called pleged to resign as minister immediately the unions provide documents to prove his involvement in the shady deal.

A document has suddenly surfaced online with the signature of the then minister of education awarding a contract K. A. Technologies Ghana Ltd to supply the said commodities. The letter was signed by Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh on 25th November 2020.

“Following Public Procurement Authority’s approval on the above subject, the ministry of education had awarded you the contract for the supply of the following items”, the letter read in part.
