Lawyers for Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, and Akonta Mining have indicated plans to request a court order compelling the prosecution to release additional documents they consider vital to their defense.
The legal team argued that essential materials were missing from the disclosures filed by the State, despite their relevance to preparing a robust defense for the accused persons. Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and Akonta Mining are currently facing charges relating to alleged mining activities on their Samreboi concession without the required approvals.
Tuesday’s sitting on November 25, scheduled for a case management conference, was meant to outline the structure of the upcoming trial. However, proceedings shifted when lead defence counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi informed the court of their intention to file a formal application seeking additional disclosures.
This came after the prosecution insisted that the documents submitted on October 31 and November 11 represented the full set of materials they intend to rely on. Appiah-Kubi countered that the defence expected supplementary disclosures, including documents not marked for evidence but still useful to the accused during case management.
He revealed that although the defiance had already prepared a motion demanding full disclosure, it had not yet been officially filed, prompting the request for more time.
The presiding judge directed the defense to file and serve the motion on the prosecution when ready. The court also ordered the accused persons to submit the names and addresses of all witnesses they plan to call, should the prosecution establish a prima facie case.
The matter has been adjourned to December 8, 2025 at 10:00 a.m., when the defense’s application for additional disclosures will be heard.
