Security forces deployed at Zuarungu SHS following violent ethnic clashes on campus

Zuarungu Senior High School in Ghana’s Upper East Region has been shut down until further notice following a violent confrontation between Gurune and Kusasi students. The closure was ordered by Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri Atanga after a campus brawl erupted on Sunday, July 20, reportedly triggered by the alleged theft of a mobile phone.

The situation spiraled out of control as the conflict escalated into widespread violence, with portions of school property set ablaze. Tensions across the campus surged, prompting an immediate response from security forces. Four students were arrested in connection with the incident, though one reportedly escaped during police transport. According to reports, the escapee allegedly seized a police officer’s magazine during the process.

“The school must be closed to allow for calm and a thorough investigation,” the Regional Minister stated, emphasizing the urgency of stabilizing the situation and preventing further violence.

To avert possible reprisals, authorities deployed a combined force of police and military personnel to provide armed escort for students from Bawku returning home. The security presence on campus has been intensified as part of a broader plan to de-escalate tensions and safeguard lives and property.

While the full cause of the incident remains under investigation, authorities say they are taking firm steps to restore order and ensure such clashes do not recur.
