Zuwera Ibrahimah speaking out against rising child abuse in Ghana

Disturbing footage of a young child being tied and violently assaulted has reignited urgent calls for stronger protection of children across Ghana. Salaga South MP, Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, expressed deep concern over the incident and is calling for swift national action to address the broader issue of child abuse.

Referencing data from the 2023 Ghana Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, the MP highlighted that nearly 22% of children between the ages of 1 and 14 are subjected to violent disciplinary measures. These include physical, emotional, and even sexual abuse.

“Protecting children and vulnerable groups is not only a legal obligation but also a moral imperative,” she emphasized in a Facebook post shared by the Parliament of Ghana.

The recent viral video, which showed a 12-year-old being tied with nylon ropes and beaten by three adults, has shocked the public and drawn widespread condemnation. Ms. Zuwera commended the Ghana Police Service for acting quickly to respond to the incident.

“As lawmakers and custodians of human rights, we must intensify our efforts to address these pressing issues,” she urged, stressing the need for decisive, long-term solutions.

She is proposing a national sensitisation campaign to educate the public about children’s rights, challenge the normalization of violence, and encourage communities to report abuse. In addition, she is calling for the strengthening of Ghana’s legal framework to better protect vulnerable children and ensure swift enforcement of existing laws.

“Let us reaffirm our collective resolve to champion human rights, protect the vulnerable, and build a future where every child in Ghana and beyond can live in safety and dignity,” she added.
