Ashanti NPP Chairman addressing the media

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Bosiako, well known as Chairman Wontumi, has expressed strong disapproval of the newly implemented GHS 1 levy on every litre of fuel, calling the policy unacceptable and economically burdensome.

According to the regional leader, such a levy is unprecedented and places unnecessary hardship on the average Ghanaian. He criticized the decision as one that lacks global comparison and could have widespread economic implications.

In addition to the fuel concerns, he highlighted issues with the current gold pricing structure under the Ghanaian government’s Gold for Oil initiative. He noted a significant drop in gold value, citing that a pound of gold now sells for GHS 8,000, compared to GHS 13,000 during the previous NPP administration.

The chairman’s comments add to growing public dissatisfaction surrounding recent economic decisions, particularly in sectors that directly affect transport and natural resource management.

His position signals growing unease within the NPP’s regional leadership and reflects wider concerns about inflation, commodity pricing, and fiscal policy under the current government.
