Abetifi MP and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has signaled his intent to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections. He made the bold announcement during the NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus Conference in Kumasi on Saturday, June 21.

Dr. Acheampong did not hold back. He stated clearly that he is not in the race to observe but to win power. His declaration drew loud applause from party delegates, showing strong support for his candidacy.

He described his speech as the start of a focused campaign to return the NPP to power. He called for unity and shared purpose among grassroots supporters and party leadership.

Dr. Acheampong reflected on his political journey, highlighting years of service to the party. He spoke about his work in grassroots mobilisation, his role as an MP, and his time as a Cabinet Minister. He believes this experience has prepared him to lead the NPP into what he called “a new era.”

One constituency chairman summed up the atmosphere, saying the vision is not just about Bryan, but about building party strength together.

Though the official flagbearer contest is set for January 31, 2026, his appearance in Kumasi is widely seen as his official entry into the race.

Dr. Acheampong joins a growing list of hopefuls. These include Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, MP for Bosomtwe and former Education Minister, and Kennedy Agyapong, the former MP for Assin Central.

The race for 2028 has begun, and Bryan Acheampong is making it clear—he’s in it to lead.
