Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi and serving as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been granted bail by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to the tune of GH¢50 million, with two sureties required to be justified.

This development follows his arrest on Tuesday, May 27, after he reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for questioning. Subsequently, he was taken into custody by EOCO for further interrogation related to allegations of causing financial loss to the state.

According to his lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, the bail is part of a police enquiry process that allows Chairman Wontumi temporary release while investigations continue. During the interrogation, Wontumi reportedly fell ill and was hospitalized, leading to the suspension of the questioning.

The arrest and subsequent bail have sparked significant reactions within the NPP, with party leaders denouncing the arrest as politically motivated. Supporters gathered outside the EOCO offices in protest, leading to heightened security measures at the scene.

As the situation develops, further updates on Chairman Wontumi’s health and legal proceedings are anticipated.
