Diella TekuThe Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has chosen a new direction for the upcoming 2024 presidential elections with the selection of seasoned broadcast journalist, Philip Kwabena Agyemang, widely known as Roman Fada, as its new presidential candidate. This shift in leadership follows the sudden passing of Madam Akua Donkor, the party’s founder and former flagbearer, who died on October 28, 2024.
Roman Fada, who had previously been announced as Akua Donkor’s running mate, shared insights on this unexpected transition during a recent interview. Reflecting on the decision-making process, he remarked, “It is true and we all know what happened a week ago today around 10 pm when Akua Donkor passed. God rest her soul. As you know, I was the running mate for the party’s 2024 presidential candidate ahead of the elections.”
With Donkor’s absence deeply felt across the GFP, the party’s leadership engaged in extensive consultations to determine the most suitable successor. Recognizing Roman Fada’s commitment and proximity to the campaign, they concluded he was the right person to lead the party into the election season. “She is no longer with us,” Roman Fada acknowledged, “so the party’s leadership deemed it right for me to replace Akua Donkor in the elections. So, if you heard, I am the new flagbearer for Ghana Freedom Party.”
As Roman Fada steps into this significant role, he is preparing to shape his team and agenda. He confirmed that he will soon announce his running mate, a decision that will involve further discussions with the party’s leadership to ensure continuity and alignment with the GFP’s goals and values.
This transition not only marks a new chapter for the Ghana Freedom Party but also underscores the resilience and adaptability of its leadership in the face of unexpected loss. Roman Fada’s campaign is expected to honor Akua Donkor’s legacy while steering the party’s vision forward.
