Ghana Freedom Party to Elect New Candidate as EC Halts Presidential Ballot Printing After Akua Donkor’s Passing

Following the unexpected death of Akua Donkor, presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), the Electoral Commission (EC) has paused the printing of ballot papers for the 2024 election. The EC cited Article 50(4) of the 1992 Constitution, allowing the GFP a 10-day period to nominate a new candidate to replace Donkor, who was known for her dedication to grassroots politics and commitment to representing her party at national levels.

In a press release signed by Deputy EC Chairman Samuel Tettey, the Commission expressed condolences and explained the constitutional process: “Where at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of 10 days shall be allowed for nominations.” This move requires the GFP to present a new candidate before ballot printing can resume.

Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi, the GFP’s vice-presidential candidate, popularly known as “Roman Fada,” has publicly expressed his willingness to step in as the presidential candidate. Speaking with Angel FM monitored by adwoaadubianews.com, he stated, “If the law says I should be the flag bearer, why not? I am ready to take up the mantle.” Known in the entertainment sector, Roman Fada believes his network could bolster GFP’s visibility and support.

Roman Fada also recounted Akua Donkor’s health struggles leading up to her passing on October 28, 2024, at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital. Donkor, a notable figure in Ghanaian politics, founded the GFP in 2011. As an iconic person in the political realm, she advocates for the underrepresented,  making a mark as a resilient candidate in both parliamentary and presidential races.

As the GFP considers its next step, this moment does not only pause the ballot preparation but also signals a critical juncture in Ghana’s political landscape.
