Former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has appealed to Ghanaians to prioritize peace and unity as the nation prepares for the December 7 general elections. Speaking at the signing of the 4th Presidential Election Peace Pact in Accra on Thursday, November 28, Mahama emphasized the shared responsibility of all citizens to safeguard Ghana’s stability.

Mahama’s Call for Peaceful Elections

Urging Ghanaians to commit to non-violence, Mahama stated: “Let us all pledge to promote peace during these elections. Let us work together to create an environment that is conducive for free, fair, and peaceful elections.

“We owe it to ourselves, to our children, and to future generations to preserve the peace and stability that our dear country Ghana has enjoyed for so long.”

He encouraged political leaders, supporters, and the general public to resist actions that could incite violence or unrest. Stressing the long-term benefits of peaceful coexistence, Mahama appealed to political parties to conduct issue-based campaigns and respect the election outcomes.

Dr. Bawumia Echoes the Call for Unity

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, also delivered a passionate message during the ceremony. He called on political parties, the media, and security agencies to ensure peace prevails during and after the elections.

Bawumia underscored Ghana’s consistent ability to uphold democratic principles, saying: “Ghana always passes the test whenever it goes to the polls. Let us once again demonstrate to the world that we can embrace democracy and peace in our electoral process.”

The Peace Pact: A Symbol of Commitment

The Presidential Election Peace Pact is a significant gesture by political leaders to assure Ghanaians of their dedication to free, fair, and peaceful elections. Both Mahama and Bawumia’s unified stance reflects their commitment to maintaining Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy and stability in Africa.

As the election date approaches, their appeals underscore the importance of peace not only for the present but also for future generations.
