Dennis Miracles Aboagye, Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign, says Ghana’s political future should not be shaped by the expectation that a sitting president must fail for another leader to emerge.
Contributing to discussions on Citi Eyewitness News on Friday, January 16, Mr Aboagye argued that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential ambition is founded on ideas, vision and leadership capacity, rather than on the performance of President John Dramani Mahama.
He said this approach reflects a broader belief that Ghana’s development should be driven by continuity and progress, not partisan rivalry or political collapse.
Mr Aboagye pointed to Dr Bawumia’s New Year address as evidence of this mindset, noting that the former Vice President openly wished President Mahama well, reinforcing the view that national success benefits all Ghanaians regardless of party affiliation.
Addressing claims that the New Patriotic Party’s prospects hinge on the National Democratic Congress failing in government, Mr Aboagye dismissed such interpretations as misplaced.
He explained that by 2028, President Mahama would have had the opportunity to implement his vision for the country, after which voters could objectively assess achievements and challenges across various sectors.
According to him, the task ahead would then be to identify leadership capable of building on progress made, correcting shortcomings and advancing Ghana to a higher level of development.
Mr Aboagye stressed that leadership transitions should be guided by vision and competence, adding that this principle is central to what Dr Bawumia represents.
The New Patriotic Party is expected to elect its presidential candidate on January 31, 2026, as part of preparations for the next general elections.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is among five aspirants contesting the party’s flagbearership, alongside former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong; Abetifi MP Dr Bryan Acheampong; Bosomtwe MP Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; and former NPP General Secretary, Ing. Kwabena Agyepong.
