Parliament Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga Responds to Afenyo-Markin’s Claims of Bias and Partisan Camera Coverage.

On June 3, 2025, Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, publicly criticized Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin following recent allegations that the parliamentary camera crew engaged in partisan conduct and biased coverage during proceedings.

During a parliamentary session on June 3, 2025, Afenyo-Markin expressed dissatisfaction with the behavior of the Parliament House camera operators. He claimed that the camera crew focused selectively on him, particularly targeting his legs while he was removing his shoe due to discomfort. The MP from Effutu also alleged that the camera coverage was partisan, seemingly aimed at undermining his position.

In a swift reaction, Mahama Ayariga, MP for Bawku Central, condemned Afenyo-Markin’s reaction, questioning the consistency of his concerns about bias. Ayariga pointed out that the Minority Leader previously sat on the floor barefoot during protests at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), openly displaying his feet to the public.

Ayariga stated, “My friend, the honorable minority leader, is worried about his feet today. A few days ago, he was lying in front of EOCO with his feet on display for all Ghanaians to see.” He further added, “He, himself, removed his shoe and sat barefoot in the chamber during protests, encouraging others from his party to follow suit.”

The incident has sparked debate over the impartiality of parliamentary camera coverage during proceedings. Critics argue that biased visual coverage can influence public perception and undermine the credibility of parliamentary debates.

Mahama Ayariga’s remarks highlight the ongoing controversy surrounding media coverage in Ghana’s Parliament and raise questions about fairness and professionalism among parliamentary camera crews. The exchange between Ayariga and Afenyo-Markin underscores the political tensions and the importance of unbiased media in parliamentary proceedings.
